Film Review: Tell No One ( Ne Le Dis a Personne)

Relentless edge of your seat suspense, jaw dropping, high octane action and a powerful love story combine in what has been hailed by many critics as "the film of the year" (2007). Tell No One follows one mans frantic race against time when his tragic past is suddenly and and unexpectedly unearthed. Dr. Alex Beck is left unconscious, after his wife and childhood sweetheart Margot is brutally murdered. Eight years on, still unaware of the truth, Alex receives an anonymous e-mail. Clicking on the link he sees a woman in a crowd, Margot's face...But before this can sink in, Alex is thrown headlong into a deadly chase, running from both the police and a team of killers who will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden. Excellent performance from Francois Cluzet & Co. This is a film in French however, non-speakers can follow all the action with English subtitles. A must-see for all action/thriller savvy people and world cinema lovers who aren't a big fan of Hollywood production cliches..

MyBar Beirut (No. really, it is YOUR bar)

Haytham & Nael Nasr (above)

Sushi? check. Drinks? check. Music? check. So what is exactly MyBar. The name says it all ladies and gentlemen, yes it's a bar slash restaurant which you can be part owner of, whilst enjoying late nights at the trendy place in downtown Beirut. This pioneering concept located on the first floor of the Beryrtus Building in Beirut’s Central District, was launched two years ago by brothers Haytham and Nael Nasr whom came up with the concept of creating a bar where 100 investors were needed to raise the start-up capital of $1 million dollars, divided into shares ranging from $ 2,000 to $20,000. All they had to do is post videos on youtube, advertise on facebook and seduce the owner and CEO of the Virgin empire, Richard Branson. Being a part owner of MyBar comes with many privileges and one of them is having each owner's name carved on a section of a wall. Proud and loud! MyBar offers high quality Asian fusion cuisine catered by professional international chefs and a selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Amongst the team that is behind the mouthwatering dishes, is the sole Japanese chef in Lebanon, whose specialties include: Fresh Seabass, grilled with Portobello mushrooms and furikake rice and Wagyu Japanese premium beef, mix mayzina salad, furikake powder and fleur de sel as well as sushi.
MyBar also boasts unique interior design showed off on two main levels. The first level is composed of a bar accompanied by several different sized tables linked together via a futuristic white pipe settings suspended from the ceilings. The second level is more of a lounge style setting, offering guests the opportunity to wine and dine on comfortably seated tables whilst also having a dedicated bar area.

Verdict: 5/5. A place to go for late night dinner and drinks with friends. Enjoyable environment and people to mix with. Lovely food, music and drinks. Pricey? no. Generously and affordably priced. All worth it.

WikiLeaks' Collateral Murder: U.S. Soldier Ethan McCord

I am sure you have heard of WikiLeaks by now. For those who haven't, it is a whistle blowing website that publishes submissions of otherwise unavailable documents from anonymous news resources and leaks.
On July 6, 2010, Private Bradley Manning, a 22 year old intelligence analyst with the United States Army in Baghdad, was charged with disclosing this video (after allegedly speaking to an unfaithful journalist). The whistleblower behind the Pentagon Papers, Daniel Ellsberg, has called Mr. Manning a 'hero'. He is currently imprisoned in Kuwait.
Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-sight, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded.

The full live video of the engagement can be viewed here.

Shutter Island

From Oscar wwinning director Martin Scorsese, "Shutter Island" is the story of two U.S marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island's fortress- like hospital for the criminally insane.

Verdict: A masterpiece. It is one of those films that when you walk away you feel like you've actually watched something worthwhile for once in a blue-moon. It will keep you glued to your screen and take you through the same journey and investigation as the protagonist and most importantly at the same pace. Martin Scorsese is a true genius at what he does and knows exactly how to play out a plot in 2hr 15mins whilst making sure nothing is missing. A true psychologic thriller (with a touch of romance)... A dvd to own! 5/5

MyBar - Beirut

A little preview of my next business/bar blogging session.....

Let's just say its a cool place called MyBar in Beirut (Lebanon)...

The iPad and Apple Craze

Ah yes, THE wonderful world of THE ALMIGHTY iPad. Or is it? What are people's fascination about the iPad? or have we become a human race obsessed with materialism? Personally i do not have an Ipad as of yet, although i have given the object a few thoughts, yes i have been tempted. I for one, do not think i need one, i do not see how it would change my life by having one or not as i am rather well off without one, apart from digging deep into my pockets to finance one which costs a staggering £500! How have i been tempted then? well, simply by seeing it as other people's new "it" gadget, feeling i need to join the "it" group, the "cool" group, the "i know all about technology" group. Apple uses some clever marketing strategy to make me want one, because i am one of those people that even if you gave me an IPad for free, wouldn't use it. I am one of those people who makes the marketers lives a living hell by trying to sell me a product. I am basically one of those people, that do not follow the sheep. However,  Apple's products have become a part of our lives ( as sad as it sounds), it has marketed itself as part of a lifestyle. Apple's products is a lifestyle in its own right. People want to be part of that modern lifestyle, they want to be referred to that lifestyle in any possible way and that is done by simply owning the latest Apple gadget. It is a lifestyle that even the non-sheep envy in some weird way... It is a lifestyle that will always be there, with new products and ideas that will make you comeback for more and if you haven't been there yet, it will pull you in like a kid in a candy shop! Apple has become a part of your life whether you like it or not.... and it is going to be here for a very veryyy, ( cannot emphasise how much) long time. FIND YOUR INNER APPLE! go on you know you want one...... I had to sacrifice my Sony Vaio for an Apple Macbook and i am ashamed to say it but i've become an Apple victim. Still does not make me a sheep. I proudly must say. I shall resist the temptation. I even eat more apples than i used to! Ok ok let's not get ahead of ourselves now... But honestly and truthfully, Windows is sooo much better than Apple's operating system Mac OS X. Yes it is a pain when i cannot download window softwares that the majority of the world uses and have to find sometimes non existent substitutes for Mac. I have been deceived once by Apple and thou shalt NOT, be deceived again or fall into the trap of temptation, or eat Eve's apple... Promise?.... euhm. We shall see... ahhh give me a break. NEVER say NEVER. FACT.

Knowledge is power: Learn the basics about the fight against global poverty and disease.

Let me tell you more about HIV/AIDS,

HIV/AIDS is a treatable and preventable disease that disproportionately affects the world's poor. Sub-Saharan Africa is the hardest hit region, where two-thirds of all people are living with HIV. The human impact of this disease is undeniable, but their socioeconomic impact is also severe and measureable. In sub-Saharan Africa especially, AIDS threatens to wipe out an entire generation during its most productive years. Businesses are losing their workers, governments are losing their civil servants and families are losing not only their loved ones but also their breadwinners.

The immense human toll of AIDS in the late 1990s injected a new urgency into the need to enhance prevention and treatment efforts. Though the resources to fight this disease have increased exponentially in recent years, funding remains too little and too slow in coming. Moreover, weak health systems have limited success in the fight against HIV, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The shortage of health workers, for example, is one of the biggest hurdles in expanding treatment and prevention efforts. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 24% of the global burden of disease, but only 3% of the world's health workforce. Already stretched doctors, nurses and pharmacists, as well as the systems and facilities that support them, must be strengthened to address HIV/AIDS, but also to ensure better basic health outcomes overall.

The Opportunity:
New momentum in the fight against HIV/AIDS, has helped extend effective and affordable prevention and treatment services to millions of people. Antiretroviral medication for people living with HIV/AIDS now costs approximately $140 per patient per year, down from nearly $10,000 only ten years ago.
Global resources devoted to fighting this disease have been rapidly scaled up in recent years, delivering impressive results in many sub-Saharan African countries. Across sub-Saharan Africa, expanded access to life-saving antiretroviral treatment has meant that an AIDS diagnosis is no longer a death sentence for millions of people. Nearly 4 million Africans are receiving antiretroviral treatment for HIV/AIDS, up from only 50,000 in 2002. Botswana and Rwanda have achieved universal access to antiretroviral therapy by providing treatment to at least 80% of patients in need. In Benin, Ethiopia, Mali, Namibia, Senegal, Swaziland and Zambia more than half of people in need of antiretroviral medication are receiving it and coverage levels are approaching the 80% target.

Dear friend,

I need 30 seconds of your time to help change the world.

By adding our voice, we can show that even in hard times, people around the world still care about those who don't have access to clean water or basic healthcare. The kind of extreme poverty that sees nearly 400,000 children born each year with HIV when this is completely preventable through simple treatment.

We can prevent this – by 2015 we can deliver the medicines so that no child is born with HIV. It starts with all of us asking world leaders to support efforts to make it happen.

I’ve added my name. Please add yours:

Together we can achieve a world where no child is born with HIV by 2015.

Thank you,

Downfall

Set in Berlin in 1946, this powerful and provocative war drama retells the final days of the Second World War as recorded in the diaries of Adolf Hitler's private secretary, Traudl Junge, while barricaded with Hitler and his closest confidants in the Fuhrer's secret bunker. Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (The Experiment) with an astonishing performance by Bruno Ganz ( The Manchurian Candidate) as history's most notorious figure, this unprecedented and controversial insider's perspective is gripping insight into the madness and desperation of Hitler in the final hours of the war as the Russian Army closes a ring around Berlin.
